Mechanic of the day

Spell-Parry Tug

Controls:

Mage: A/D moveJ boltK blinkFighter: ←/→ moveN slashM parry

Rules: Mage bolts travel slowly and leave neon afterimages. Fighter parry is 10 active frames, reflects weak bolts, and stores one “ember” if timed in the final 3 frames. Ember powers a lunging slash that breaks cover.

Win condition: First to 3 ring-outs or KOs on a compact, two-platform arena.

Test: Can the fighter advance without feeling helpless, and can the mage create space without becoming untouchable?

Juice checklist

  • 6-frame hitstop on parry, 10-frame on ember punish

  • Screen nudge toward the player who wins neutral
  • Distinct low-health CRT hum per side
  • UI bars pulse only on actionable cooldowns
  • Dust puffs reveal dash start/end positions
  • Cover cracks in 3 readable damage states
